The Konso Cultural Landscape in southwestern Ethiopia is a multi-layered agricultural and settlement system formed by the Konso people, characterised by stone-walled terraces, fortified villages and carved wooden memorial statues. The landscape represents traditional dryland farming, social organisation and ritual practices sustained over many generations.

Key features include tiered terraces that stabilise steep hillsides and retain soil, compact fortified settlements with stone enclosure walls, and grave sites marked by carved wooden waka statues. The pattern of fields, paths and settlement clusters forms an integrated designed landscape that continues to be managed by local communities.

The Konso area is located in the southern highlands of Ethiopia within the administrative South Ethiopia Regional State; the town of Konso serves as the local centre for markets and cultural exchange.

• Living agricultural system: The landscape is a living cultural system: terraces and stone walls are actively maintained and continue to support dryland cultivation by the Konso people.
• Distinctive memorial art: Waka wooden statues and grave platforms are distinctive cultural markers still visible in settlement cemeteries and communal spaces.

• Town of Konso: The town and market centre around which the cultural landscape is organised and where traditional social structures remain active.

Konso town is accessed by road from Awassa (Hawassa) or Dilla; public buses and minibuses ply the region but schedules are irregular. Better to hire a private vehicle from major regional centers; local guides are available for village tours.

• Arrange a guided visit with a local cultural mediator to properly understand the social rules and inheritance systems that shape Konso life.
• Observe the structural markers - the stacked terraces and stone-plinth tombs - from a respectful distance; some are active ancestral sites with restrictions.
• The village cluster of Konso is built into hillsides; bring binoculars for an overview of the terraced fields and carved wooden totems called wagas.
