Labrang Monastery (Labrang Tashikyil) is a major Tibetan Buddhist monastery founded in 1709 and known as one of the principal Gelugpa institutions outside central Tibet. It functions as both a religious training centre and a living monastic community.
The complex contains large assembly halls, richly decorated chapels, a debate courtyard and traditional monastic colleges. Visitors observe painted interiors, rows of butter lamps and public ritual events; the monastery is also known for its extensive collection of Tibetan scriptures.
Founded by a Tibetan lama in 1709, Labrang developed into an important centre for Buddhist learning and pilgrimage over the 18th and 19th centuries. It experienced disruption and restoration during the 20th century but has remained a focal point for Tibetan culture and religious education.
The monastery is located in the county town of Xiahe in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu province in northwest China, on the eastern edge of the Tibetan cultural area.

How to Get to Labrang Monastery #
Xiahe (the town serving Labrang) is accessible by bus from Lanzhou (approx. 6-8 hours) or by the Lanzhou-Gannan highway; there are also seasonal flights to Gannan Xiahe Airport (formerly Gansu Airport) followed by a short road transfer. From Xiahe town centre the monastery is a 10-15 minute walk.
