Bingling Temple

Bingling Temple is a series of Buddhist cave temples carved into limestone cliffs on the Yellow River in Gansu province, China, with art and sculpture dating from roughly the 5th century onwards. The site contains rock-cut grottoes, painted murals and freestanding statues arranged along cliff faces above the river.

Notable elements include richly decorated shrine caves and a large seated Buddha figure visible within the main carved chamber. The complex is visited for its examples of Buddhist iconography and for the combination of caves, statuary and mural painting.

The caves were carved and decorated over many centuries by Buddhist communities and patrons, reflecting artistic developments from early medieval through later dynastic periods. Conservation and careful visitor management are in place because of the age and fragility of the murals and sculptures.

Bingling Temple sits on a cliff above a bend of the Yellow River near Liujiaxia Reservoir in Yongjing County, Gansu; visitor access is usually by boat from the reservoir and seasonal water levels influence opening times.
