How to Get to La Marsa
La Marsa is a coastal suburb of Tunis easily reached via Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN) and connected to central Tunis by the TGM light rail. Most visitors arrive through TUN and then use taxis or the TGM/transtu network to reach La Marsa.
Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN): The nearest airport for La Marsa, about 15-20 km southwest of the suburb. From the terminal you can take a taxi to La Marsa (roughly 20-30 TND, about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic) or a rental car; there are also airport/Transtu buses into central Tunis (low single fares, typically under 2 TND) from where you can transfer to the TGM light rail for La Marsa (see Train section).
Train: The TGM (Tramway Tunis-Goulette-Marsa) light-rail runs from Tunis Marine to La Marsa; Tunis Marine is the main city terminus and the TGM pierces the northern suburbs to La Marsa. A single TGM journey is inexpensive (typically under 1 TND) and takes about 25-35 minutes end-to-end; it is the most reliable public-transport option to reach La Marsa from central Tunis.
Bus: Transtu city buses and local routes serve La Marsa from greater Tunis; single fares are low (generally around 0.5-1.5 TND) and trip times depend on route and traffic (typically 25-45 minutes from central Tunis). For faster point-to-point travel, grand taxis (shared or hired) run between Tunis and La Marsa - expect short rides of 15-30 minutes and modest fares.
How to Get Around La Marsa
La Marsa is best navigated using the TGM light rail for reliable trips to/from central Tunis and a mix of Transtu buses or taxis for local travel. For most visitors, the TGM plus short taxi rides gives the best balance of cost, speed and convenience.
- TGM (Tramway Tunis-Goulette-Marsa) (≤1 TND) - The TGM is the most convenient public transit link between central Tunis (Tunis Marine) and La Marsa, running along the coast with stops at Sidi Bou Saïd and other northern suburbs. Services are frequent enough for day visits and the ride is direct and scenic; expect about 25-35 minutes from Tunis Marine to La Marsa. Buy tickets at stations or kiosks before boarding.
- Transtu buses (0.5-1.5 TND) - Transtu operates the city buses that serve La Marsa and surrounding neighbourhoods; routes connect La Marsa with Tunis, La Goulette and other suburbs. Buses are the cheapest option but can be slower in peak traffic; check local timetables and route maps at main stops. Ticket inspectors sometimes board, so keep a valid ticket.
- Grand taxis (shared taxis) (1-4 TND) - Grand taxis are shared fixed-route vehicles that run between Tunis and La Marsa and are useful for short, direct hops when you can't wait for a bus. They depart when full and are faster than buses off-peak; agree the price or ensure you know the usual short-route fare before you board. They're an authentic local option but less comfortable if packed.
- Regular taxis (2-15 TND) - Metered taxis are plentiful in La Marsa and convenient for door-to-door travel, especially late at night or with luggage. Expect short intra-suburb fares of a few dinars; always confirm whether the meter will be used and have small change ready. Taxis are the best choice for convenience though more expensive than public transit.
- Car hire / driving (30-70 TND/day) - Renting a car gives maximum flexibility to explore La Marsa, nearby Sidi Bou Saïd and the northern coast, but parking in the busiest spots (beaches, cafés) can be limited in summer. Roads around La Marsa are straightforward; use a local map or GPS and expect occasional congestion during peak hours. Consider a car only if you plan day trips outside the immediate Tunis metro area.
- Walking - La Marsa is compact and pleasant to explore on foot - the seafront, cafés and markets are easily walkable and walking reveals the town's coastal character. Use walking for short hops and to access beaches and local restaurants; cobbled streets and some hills mean comfortable shoes are recommended.
