Medina of Tunis

The Medina of Tunis is the historic old city of Tunisia’s capital, a dense urban core of narrow streets, markets, mosques and historic residences. It developed as the city’s commercial, religious and administrative center and preserves a wide array of Islamic-era architecture and urban planning.

Prominent features include the central congregational mosque, labyrinthine souks and a large number of historic houses and palaces with decorative facades and courtyards. The medina’s streets are organized around commercial specializations and traditional craft districts that have operated for centuries.

The medina grew from early Islamic and medieval periods as Tunis became an important regional capital, accumulating religious, civic and commercial buildings over many centuries. Preservation efforts have highlighted its architectural, cultural and historical importance.

The Medina of Tunis is the historic heart of central Tunis and is best reached to the city centre. Major approach roads include Avenue Habib Bourguiba into central Tunis; the medina is pedestrianised in many parts, so arrive at nearby parking or transit stops and continue on foot.

Tunis is served by regional rail and urban transit; from central Tunis stations or main bus stops the medina is within a short walk. If arriving by car, use signage for the medina/old city and park at designated lots on the edge of the historic area.

• Enter the medina through Bab el Bhar (Porte de France) to pop directly into the main souks and then work northward into quieter artisan quarters-this reduces aimless wandering into the busiest lanes.
• Go in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak mid-day market bustle and the strongest sun; many shops open later in the day, so mornings are best for photography and exploring empty alleys.
• Seek out the small craft workshops off the main market streets (woodworkers, metalworkers, tailors)-these artisan pockets are often overlooked by visitors who stay on the main souk routes.
