How to Get to La Laguna
San Cristóbal de La Laguna (commonly "La Laguna") is best reached via Tenerife's two airports: Tenerife North (TFN) for the shortest transfer and Tenerife South (TFS) if you arrive on international flights with fewer direct links. The island's TITSA buses and the Tranvía light rail provide regular, inexpensive connections into the town centre.
Tenerife North-Los Rodeos Airport (TFN): TFN is the closest airport to San Cristóbal de La Laguna (about 10-15 minutes by road). Taxi from TFN to La Laguna town centre typically costs around €10-€18 and takes ~10-20 minutes depending on traffic; local TITSA buses and shared airport shuttles serve the route for about €1.50-€3 and take roughly 15-25 minutes.
Tenerife South-Reina Sofía Airport (TFS): TFS is on the opposite side of the island and is farther from La Laguna. Direct taxis from TFS to La Laguna cost roughly €60-€80 and take about 40-60 minutes. Cheaper is to take a TITSA intercity bus (combined routes) or a shuttle to Santa Cruz/La Laguna for €3.50-€8 with total travel time around 50-80 minutes depending on connections.
Train: Tenerife has no heavy national rail network. The island does have the Tranvía de Tenerife (light rail/tram) connecting La Laguna (Parque La Vega / Intercambiador La Laguna) with Santa Cruz; a single tram journey costs around €1.35-€1.70 and takes about 10-15 minutes between the two centres.
Bus: TITSA is the island bus operator; La Laguna’s main hub is the Intercambiador La Laguna. Local and interurban routes connect La Laguna with Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz and Tenerife South. Short local fares are generally in the €1.40-€3.50 range; intercity trips (e.g., La Laguna-TFS) are typically €3.50-€8 depending on route and take from ~20 minutes (to Santa Cruz) up to 60-80 minutes (to the south).
How to Get Around La Laguna #
San Cristóbal de La Laguna’s historic centre is compact and very walkable; most visitors see the main sights on foot. The streets are narrow and often busy with students, so comfortable shoes are useful. Public transport links are good for an island city: TITSA buses and the Tranvía (tram) connect La Laguna with Santa Cruz and other parts of Tenerife, and taxis are plentiful for short hops. Tickets are inexpensive (single journeys typically run in the low single-digit euros); consider a rechargeable transport card for multiple trips and check schedules on the TITSA site.

Nightlife in La Laguna #
La Laguna has a lively, student-influenced nightlife concentrated in and around the historic centre; bars, tapas places and casual pubs keep going late, especially on weekends. Live-music nights and small concerts pop up in bars and cultural centres, but there are fewer large clubs than in nearby Santa Cruz. Evening crowds cluster around the main squares and narrow streets close to the university area. If you’re looking for a bigger club scene, a short trip to Santa Cruz expands your options.
Shopping in La Laguna #
The old town has independent boutiques, artisan shops and small galleries selling local crafts, clothing and Canarian food products. You’ll also find a municipal market for fresh produce and everyday goods in the central area. Look for locally made items such as Canarian cheeses, mojo sauces, traditional ceramics and small leather or textile goods. Many shops close mid-afternoon for a siesta, then reopen into the evening.
