Chuy Valley & Bishkek (Northern Lowlands)
Crisp mornings give way to hints of thaw as the valley moves toward spring; late snowfalls are still possible in the suburbs and on higher approaches to Ala-Archa. Farmers begin ploughing outside the city and the first street-side vendors appear selling warm samsa and tea - a welcome sign for travelers. By mid-month, potholes start to show, and if you plan to drive to Issyk-Kul or the mountains, check local advice for pass conditions and carry warm clothing.
Issyk‑Kul & Eastern Tien Shan (Lake and Karakol area)
By late winter the first real hints of spring show; small shops in Cholpon-Ata begin stocking handicrafts and the ice on smaller ponds melts. Higher passes remain closed and trekking routes are still under snow, but dogsleds and winter festivals sometimes run in resort towns. Travelers should keep flexible plans if hoping to reach alpine meadows - reliable access usually waits until late spring.
Naryn Plateau & Song‑Kul (Central Highlands)
Late winter brings a very gradual lengthening of daylight but still true winter conditions at plateau elevations through March. Snowpack begins to settle rather than freshen, yet thawing in lower valleys is patchy and roads can become slushy as daytime highs flirt with freezing. Nooruz is celebrated in some mountain communities; if you plan to travel, confirm that the seasonal tracks are open and have contingency plans for delays.
Fergana Valley & Southern Lowlands (Osh, Jalal‑Abad)
By March the Fergana floor shows clear signs of warming and preparations for Nooruz brighten markets and streets. Fruit trees around Margilan and Fergana begin blossoming and the valley fills with scent and colour; it’s an atmospheric month for food- and history-focused travelers. Occasional spring storms can still pop up from the surrounding ranges, so a light rain jacket and flexible plans are useful.
