Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a historic Orthodox monastic complex in Kyiv, Ukraine, founded in 1051 and one of Eastern Europe’s major religious centres. It is noted for its cave monasteries, a skyline of domed churches, and an extensive ensemble of religious buildings.

The site includes an underground cave system used for monastic burials and relics, multiple cathedrals and churches on the surface, and the prominent Great Lavra Bell Tower, which reaches about 96.5 metres. Pilgrims and tourists come to view relics, icons, the cave shrines, and the monastery’s churches and museums.

Founded in the mid-11th century by Saint Anthony (with Saint Theodosius later developing the monastic rule), the Lavra grew into a major spiritual and cultural centre of Kyivan Rus. The complex has been expanded, rebuilt, and restored across centuries, notably during the Baroque period and after damage in the 20th century.

The monastery sits on the steep right bank of the Dnieper River in Kyiv, within the Pechersk district and a short distance southeast of the city centre. It is a prominent landmark visible from across the river and is accessible by road and metro from central Kyiv.

• Start early in the morning to avoid peak pilgrimage times and guided-group arrivals so you can move between the Upper Monastery museums and the cave complex at a calm pace.
• Buy the combined-access ticket that covers the caves (Lower Lavra) and the museum halls-the caves are a separate, timed experience and are easy to miss if you only walk the surface grounds.
• Don't rush past the bell tower and museum rooms: the Great Lavra Bell Tower and nearby museum displays offer views and historical context many visitors skip when they focus only on the churches.
