The Kunstkamera in St. Petersburg is Russia’s oldest museum, established by Peter the Great in the early 18th century to house natural history, anthropology and ethnographic collections. It is often called the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography and still holds large historic collections assembled under imperial patronage.

Exhibits cover human cultures, medical curiosities and ethnographic material from across the Russian Empire and beyond, organised into long-standing departmental collections. The building is notable for its baroque architecture and a tall central tower on the Neva embankment.

Over time the museum’s collections were reorganised into specialised institutions, but the Kunstkamera remains a centre for historical anthropology and public display of early modern natural and cultural collections. It sits on the University Embankment in central St. Petersburg, close to other museums and government buildings.
