Kumma (Nubia)
Archaeological Site Ancient Nubian archaeological site in Sudan
Kumma is the name associated with an ancient Egyptian fortress site in Nubia, part of a chain of frontier forts established to control movement along the Nile. It is linked with the Middle Kingdom frontier system that included nearby Semna.
Archaeological remains at Kumma include fortification features and inscriptions connected to Egyptian administrative and military control of the cataract corridor. Much of the Second Cataract region was altered by later river works and the Aswan High Dam project, affecting preservation and access.
The site lies on the Nile in what is now northern Sudan in the general area of the Second Cataract and the zone historically described as Nubia, a region that saw long periods of Egyptian presence and control.
- Inundation: Many of the Middle Kingdom forts and related remains in the Second Cataract region were inundated or affected by the creation of Lake Nasser, so surviving remains may be submerged or difficult to access.
