Ballana

Ballana is an archaeological site in Egypt’s Aswan Governorate notable for cemetery complexes and tombs from the late antique and early medieval periods. Excavations at the site revealed burial assemblages that have been important for the study of post-Meroitic Nubian culture.

The cemetery complexes include elaborate tomb structures and grave goods that provide evidence for local elites during the transition from the late ancient world into early medieval Nubian polities. The site is south of the Nile Valley population centers around Aswan and is primarily of archaeological rather than mass-tourist interest.
