The Kumbum Monastery (Ta’er Si) is a major Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Gelug school located in Huangzhong County, Qinghai province, China. It is one of the most important monastic centers for Tibetan Buddhism outside the Tibet Autonomous Region.
The complex contains multiple temples, assembly halls and stupas arranged across terraces on a hillside, with hundreds of chapels and shrines open to visitors. The site includes a large assembly hall used for ceremonies and a museum-like collection of ritual objects, thangkas and religious texts; many buildings display traditional Tibetan-style decoration and architecture.
The monastery developed as an important Gelugpa center under Tibetan and Mongolian patronage and expanded over several centuries into a large institutional complex. It has remained an active monastery and pilgrimage site through the Qing dynasty and into the modern Chinese period, undergoing restorations in the 20th century.
Sited in Huangzhong County about 20-30 km southwest of downtown Xining, the monastery sits on settled agricultural land at the eastern edge of the Tibetan cultural region of Amdo. The nearest city is Xining, the capital of Qinghai province.
