How to Get to Koni-Djodjo#
Koni-Djodjo is on Anjouan (Nzwani) island. The nearest airport on Anjouan is Ouani (AJN); many international arrivals land at Moroni (HAH) and transfer to Anjouan by a short domestic flight or ferry.
Ouani Airport (AJN): Ouani is the main airport on Anjouan island and the closest airport to Koni-Djodjo. Local taxis are the usual way into town; the ride is generally short (10-30 minutes) depending on exact landing point.
Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport (HAH): Located on Grande Comore (Moroni), this is the main international gateway for Comoros. If you arrive here you must change islands: scheduled inter-island flights or passenger ferries connect Grande Comore and Anjouan. Inter-island flights take about 20-45 minutes; ferry crossings vary widely by service and can take several hours.
Train: There are no train services on the Comoros islands. Overland rail does not exist.
Bus / Shared Taxi: Local shared taxis (often called ‘taxi-brousse’ or collective taxis) and minibuses are the primary public surface transport on Anjouan. Services run between island towns; expect informal timetables, variable departure times and travel times of tens of minutes to a few hours depending on route.
How to Get Around Koni-Djodjo#
There is no rail network; travel is by air, ferry, taxi or shared minibus. For short trips inside town, walking and local taxis work best; for island-to-island travel use the short domestic flights or ferries.
- Local taxi - Taxis are the easiest way to get between the airport and town; vehicles are informal and fares are negotiated on arrival. Drivers expect cash and bargaining; agree the fare before you get in. Journeys around the island are short compared with inter-island travel.
- Minibus / Shared taxi - Shared taxis and minibuses connect villages and towns across Anjouan. They run to loose schedules and only depart when full; luggage space can be tight. Good value for short to medium distances; be prepared for stops en route.
- Inter-island flight - Air Comores and other small carriers operate short flights between Moroni (HAH) and Ouani (AJN). Flight time is short (typically 20-45 minutes). Book in advance where possible, but schedules can change with low-frequency services.
- Ferry - Passenger ferries connect the Comorian islands; crossings take considerably longer than flights and timetables are irregular. Ferries are a cheaper option but expect basic facilities and possible delays due to weather.
- Walking - Koni-Djodjo is compact enough to explore on foot for short trips - walking is practical within the town centre. Surfaces may be uneven; bring sun protection.
