Kondoa Mjini is a historic town in central Tanzania’s Dodoma Region that serves as the administrative centre for Kondoa District and as the gateway to the nearby rock-art sites.
The area is notable for numerous painted rock shelters on surrounding sandstone outcrops; the paintings include a variety of human and animal figures and geometric designs produced over many millennia and grouped as the Rock-Art Sites of Kondoa.
The rock-art ensembles and associated cultural landscape were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property in 2006 in recognition of their archaeological and ethnographic importance.
