About Kondoa Rock-Art Sites

The Kondoa Rock-Art Sites are a series of painted rock shelters and open-air panels in central Tanzania known for figurative paintings of humans and animals. The paintings were created over a long period by hunter-gatherer and pastoralist communities and show varied styles and subjects.

Paintings occur in multiple sheltered outcrops and depict human figures, animals and scenes of daily life and ritual; they are valued for their long sequence of human activity and cultural continuity. Conservation and local management efforts aim to protect the pigments and the rock surfaces from weathering and vandalism.

The art is thought to result from successive cultural groups over many centuries, with stylistic changes reflecting shifts in livelihood and ritual practice. Researchers and local custodians document and monitor the panels to support conservation.

The sites sit in Kondoa District in Dodoma Region on a semi-arid plateau and escarpment country, accessible from the town of Kondoa and by regional roads into central Tanzania.
