Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi is a shallow rift-valley lake in northern Tanzania, situated in the Great Rift Valley south of Lake Manyara. It lies in a semi-arid basin and supports seasonal waterbird populations and wetlands when inflows are sufficient.

The area around the lake is traditionally inhabited by hunter-gatherer and pastoralist groups, and the shoreline communities maintain distinct cultural practices. The lake and its environs are used for seasonal grazing, small-scale agriculture and traditional livelihoods rather than intensive tourism.

Lake Eyasi occupies a low-lying basin in the Rift Valley floor and is located west of the Ngorongoro Highlands and south of Lake Manyara. The lake is accessed via roads from nearby towns and is part of the broader northern Tanzanian landscape.

• Local communities: The lakeshore is inhabited by Hadza hunter-gatherers and Datoga pastoralists; cultural visits should be arranged through local guides and community contacts.

• Plan visits for early morning for the best birdlife and cooler temperatures, and arrange any cultural visits (for example to Hadza or Datoga communities) through a reputable local guide in advance to ensure respectful, organised meetings.
• Expect rough roads in the wet season-confirm road and vehicle requirements with your lodge or tour operator and book a 4x4 if recommended, since access can become difficult after rain.
• Many visitors concentrate on the lakeshore; ask your guide about nearby villages and guided cultural experiences, which are often the most rewarding and are easily missed if you stick only to the roadside viewpoints.
