Ko Phuket
Island Southern Thai island district centred on Phuket Island
Phuket island off Thailand’s Andaman coast, known for sandy beaches, seafood and lively beachfront towns such as Patong; travelers use it as a base for diving, island boat trips and exploring Old Phuket Town’s Sino‑Portuguese architecture.
Ko Phuket is the main island of Phuket Province in southern Thailand and the country’s largest island administrative unit, known internationally as a major beach and resort destination. The island combines popular sandy beaches and a busy urban centre with quieter coastal areas.
Major visitor activities include beach recreation, boat trips, snorkeling and nightlife, concentrated in resort zones such as Patong, Kata and Karon, while Phuket Old Town offers historic architecture, markets and local restaurants. Hilltop viewpoints and cultural attractions, including the large hilltop Buddha statue, are common short excursions.
Historically the island was a regional centre for tin mining and maritime trade before developing into a tourism hub during the 20th century; infrastructure and accommodation expanded as visitor numbers grew. The island’s economy is now largely oriented around tourism and related services.
Phuket lies off Thailand’s west coast in the Andaman Sea and is connected to the mainland by a road bridge. The island’s urban centre, Phuket City, and its beaches are within easy driving distance of Phuket International Airport.
- Access: The island is linked to the Thai mainland by a road bridge, making it accessible by car, bus and taxi from the mainland coast.
- Best seasonality: Beach conditions and sea visibility vary seasonally; the dry season is generally the most reliable for swimming and boat trips.
What to See #
- Patong Beach: Patong Beach is the island's most developed resort area, known for its long sandy beach, nightlife and concentration of hotels and restaurants.
- Phuket Old Town: Phuket Old Town contains Sino-Portuguese buildings, markets and a compact historic centre that contrasts with the island's beach resorts.
- Kata and Karon beaches: Kata and Karon are neighbouring beaches to the south of Patong popular for swimming and family-oriented resorts; each has a long sandy shoreline and tourist services.
- Big Buddha viewpoint: The Big Buddha is a prominent hilltop statue and viewpoint that overlooks much of the island and is a common short excursion from resort areas.

Tips for Visiting Ko Phuket #
