Ko Lanta Yai is reached by road and short ferry crossings from the mainland in Krabi Province. From Krabi Town or Krabi Airport you can take regular minibuses, local buses or drive south on Highway 4 toward Saladan/Ko Lanta; the journey typically takes around 2-3 hours including the short car ferry crossing that links the island with the mainland. Most services terminate at Saladan Pier (the island’s main town); from there the island’s beaches and villages are reachable by taxi, motorbike or local songthaews (short rides of a few kilometres).

- Use Saladan as your arrival point and base - it's the island's main pier and services hub, which makes onward transfers, rentals and early-morning departures easiest to arrange.
- Visit quieter beaches and the national park at the southern tip (Lanta Old Town and Mu Ko Lanta National Park) in the late afternoon for sunset and far fewer day-trippers than the central beaches see during the day.
- Rent a scooter or arrange a driver for a half-day to explore inland and the island's viewpoint lighthouses; many visitors stick to the north coast and miss scenic outlooks and the old wooden houses of Lanta Old Town.
