How to Get to Mumias
Mumias is served indirectly: the nearest commercial airport is Kisumu International Airport (KIS); Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta (NBO) is the main national gateway with onward flights or long‑distance coaches. Overland buses and matatus from Kisumu or Nairobi are the usual way to reach Mumias.
Kisumu International Airport (KIS): Kisumu is the nearest commercial airport serving western Kenya; flights from Nairobi take about 40-60 minutes. From Kisumu you can catch a matatu/minibus toward Kakamega/Mumias (typical fare KES 200-400, journey ~1-1.5 hours) or take a taxi directly to Mumias (roughly KES 3,000-4,500, ~1-1.5 hours).
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), Nairobi: If you arrive in Nairobi you can either fly onward to Kisumu (flight ~40-60 minutes) then transfer as above, or travel overland by coach from Nairobi to Mumias/Kakamega (typical coach fare KES 800-1,200, journey ~6-7 hours).
Train: There is no regular intercity passenger rail service to Mumias; Kisumu historically had a rail station but rail passenger options are limited and unreliable for planning an arrival to Mumias.
Bus / Matatu: Road transport is the main way in. Long‑distance coaches and private bus operators run between Nairobi and towns in Kakamega County (arrive into Kakamega or nearby towns); expect coach trips of ~6-7 hours (KES 800-1,200). From Kisumu local matatus to Mumias/Kakamega run frequently (KES 200-400, ~1-1.5 hours).
How to Get Around Mumias #
Mumias is compact and largely walkable around the town centre; many short trips are easiest on foot. For longer journeys use matatus (shared minibuses) and boda-bodas (motorbike taxis), which are common and inexpensive for local trips. Intercity connections run by scheduled buses to Kakamega, Kisumu and Bungoma.
