How to Get to Kissamos#

Kissamos (Kastelli) on western Crete is served best from Chania - Chania Airport (CHQ) + KTEL bus is the usual route. There’s no rail in Crete, so travel on the island is by bus, car or taxi.

By Air

Chania International Airport ‘Ioannis Daskalogiannis’ (CHQ): Chania (Souda) airport is the closest international airport for Kissamos (Kastelli). From CHQ you can take the bus to Chania city (about 20-30 min; ticket ~€2-€3) and then the KTEL regional bus from Chania to Kissamos (see below). A taxi direct from the airport to Kissamos takes ~50-70 minutes and costs roughly €55-75.

Heraklion International Airport (HER): Heraklion is farther (roughly 140-170 km / ~2.5-3 hours by road). If you arrive at HER you can take intercity buses or rent a car; expect a longer transfer time and higher cost than from Chania.

By Train & Bus

Train: Crete has no regular rail network; trains are not available.

Bus (KTEL Chania-Kissamos): KTEL Chania operates regular buses from Chania bus station to Kissamos (Kastelli). Typical one-way fares are about €6-€9 and journey time is around 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes depending on stops. Timetables are seasonal so check KTEL Chania for current schedules; buses are the most economical option from Chania/airport connections.

How to Get Around Kissamos#

On Crete you rely on buses, cars and taxis - no trains. For Kissamos, fly to Chania (CHQ) then take the KTEL bus or a taxi. Renting a car is recommended if you want to explore the wider area and beaches at your own pace.

  • KTEL intercity bus (Chania-Kissamos) (€6-€9) - KTEL Chania runs regular services between Chania and Kissamos all year, with increased frequency in summer. Journey time is roughly 1h20-1h40; tickets are inexpensive and can be bought at the Chania bus station. Buses are reliable and the standard option for non-drivers.
  • Taxi (€20-€75) - Taxis provide direct transfers from Chania Airport or Chania town to Kissamos and are useful for groups or scheduled departures to ferries (e.g., Gramvousa/Balos). Expect around €55-75 from Chania Airport and shorter fares from Chania town; prices can be higher at night or in high season.
  • Car hire (€30+/day (rental)) - Renting a car is the most flexible way to explore western Crete and reach Kissamos at your own pace. Roads are generally in good condition; driving times are short between coastal towns. Parking in Kissamos is straightforward outside peak summer hours.
  • Ferry (from Kissamos) (€10-€30 (typical day trip)) - Kissamos is the departure point for boat trips to Gramvousa and Balos lagoon. Small passenger boats and seasonal ferries run from Kissamos harbour; prices and durations vary by operator but expect trips around 30-60 minutes and modest ticket prices (seasonal).
  • Local bus / taxi on Crete (€1.50-€6) - Local buses and shared taxis handle short hops around the peninsula and to nearby beaches. They are cheaper than taxis and practical for short distances, though schedules can be less frequent outside summer.
  • Walking - Kissamos town is compact and easy to explore on foot; the harbour, shops and restaurants are within a short stroll of each other.
