Kelud (Gunung Kelud) is an active stratovolcano in East Java, Indonesia known for periodic explosive eruptions and for historically having a crater lake. It is one of Java’s more active and closely monitored volcanoes.

The volcano’s eruptions have produced ashfall and pyroclastic activity that affect nearby towns and agriculture, and eruption events have prompted evacuations and road closures. Visitors may approach the volcano when conditions are stable but access is controlled during periods of unrest.

Kelud’s eruptive history includes multiple significant events during the 20th and 21st centuries that shaped local hazard planning and monitoring. The volcano is part of Java’s volcanic arc related to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath Eurasia.

Kelud sits inland on Java’s eastern side in East Java province, surrounded by agricultural plains and smaller towns, and is reachable by road from regional centers such as Blitar and Kediri.

  • Volcanic activity: An active stratovolcano in East Java with a history of repeated eruptions that have produced ash plumes, pyroclastic flows and lahars.
  • Monitoring: Often monitored by Indonesia's volcanological agency; local authorities issue warnings and access restrictions during unrest.

Tips for Visiting Kelud #

  • Check Indonesia's volcanological agency (PVMBG) for the current alert level and local access restrictions before travelling-Kelud is an active volcano and authorities close approaches when activity rises.
  • When the volcano is at a low alert level and access is permitted, coordinate with local authorities or guides for the safest viewpoints and up-to-date route information rather than attempting unsupervised approaches.

Best Time to Visit Kelud #

Drier conditions improve access and visibility; better for hiking and visiting viewpoints-still check local advisories for volcanic activity.
Wet season
November-March · 12-28 °C with frequent heavy rain
Heavy rains can make trails slippery and increase risk of closures; reduced visibility and potential access issues.
