Northern Steppe (Nur-Sultan / Pavlodar / Kostanay)

Early autumn is mild and golden: daytime temperatures typically sit between 10-18°C and clear, dry weather makes walks along the Ishim River or up to the observation points at Borovoe pleasant. Migrating birds pass through the region, and city parks in Nur-Sultan show the year’s first color, so photographers find rich opportunities. Evenings get chilly, so pack a warm sweater and check schedules for transport as services shift toward winter timetables.

Central Uplands / Saryarka (Karaganda / Kokshetau / Karkaraly)

August holds steady warmth but afternoon thunderstorms are more common, briefly dumping heavy rain that can make trails muddy and rivers rise quickly. Park rangers may close more remote routes when conditions turn, so check with local visitor centers in Bayanaul and around Kokshetau before setting off. The month is still excellent for horseback rides and exploring steppe geology; pack a lightweight rain jacket.

Eastern Altai & Lake Zaysan (Semey / East Kazakhstan)

July is the warmest and wettest month for many mountain valleys, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that can rapidly reduce visibility and make trails slippery near the KATUN ridgelines. Alpine meadows are at their best and local guesthouses around Kolsai and Kaindy lakes welcome visitors, so book ahead. Be prepared for short, intense rains and cooler conditions if you climb above 2,000-2,500 meters.

Southeast Tien Shan (Almaty / Ili Alatau / Charyn Canyon / Kolsai)

June launches high-season trekking and climbing with mild mountain days and cool nights; conditions around Big Almaty Lake and the Trans-Ili range are excellent for day hikes. Afternoon thunderstorms become more common toward late June, which can shorten plans for ridgeline traverses, so start hikes early. Book mountain guesthouses ahead for weekends and carry a waterproof shell for sudden showers.

Southern Lowlands & Turkestan (Shymkent / Turkestan / Taraz)

July sustains high heat and dustier conditions as the summer maximum arrives; daytime highs often sit in the low to mid-30s°C and roadside services can thin the farther you travel from major towns. Irrigation keeps some agricultural landscapes green, but open areas feel parched and dusty. Travelers should schedule sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon and keep cooled accommodations booked in advance.

Western Caspian & Mangystau (Atyrau / Aktau / Mangystau plateau)

June begins the hot, dry summer period with daytime temperatures rising toward 30°C in low-lying areas while aridity keeps humidity low; coastal towns get relief from sea breezes. The heat makes midday outdoor activity uncomfortable, so sunrise and late-afternoon excursions are best for visiting remote archaeological plateaus. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a wide-brim hat for extended outings.
