Northern Steppe (Nur-Sultan / Pavlodar / Kostanay)

By late spring, the steppe comes alive with short, warm spells - daytime highs of 15-20°C are common and wildflowers start to speckle roadside verges around Burabay and the Kokshetau foothills. This is prime time for cycling and visiting the pine lake resorts near Kokshetau, when mosquitoes are still moderate and the air is crisp after melting snow. Bring a light jacket for cool evenings and be ready for sudden wind gusts across open plains.

Central Uplands / Saryarka (Karaganda / Kokshetau / Karkaraly)

Late spring brings the clearest hiking window - May often sees 10-20°C days in the uplands and wildflowers bloom on plateau slopes near Karkaraly. Rivers and streams run high from the melt and waterfalls regain vigor in Bayanaul, perfect for photographers and day-trippers. Pack sturdy shoes for wet trails and a light fleece for cool mornings; this is one of the most pleasant times for camping before summer’s heat.

Eastern Altai & Lake Zaysan (Semey / East Kazakhstan)

Late spring brings a burst of life in April and May: meadows around Kurchum and the lower Altai bloom and wild rivers cut through melting snow, increasing the drama of waterfalls. Mountain passes begin to open for trekking later in May, but higher-altitude trails may still hold snow until June. Plan for variable weather, from warm sunshine to sudden showers and chilly nights, and hire a local guide for remote routes.

Southeast Tien Shan (Almaty / Ili Alatau / Charyn Canyon / Kolsai)

By April the snowline retreats visibly; lower trails near Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lakes thaw allowing canyon walks and lakeside hiking, though higher passes may still be snowbound. Wildflowers begin to appear in sheltered valleys, and rivers swell from the melt creating dramatic flows in the gorges. Bring waterproof boots and an extra day in your schedule for roads that can be briefly impassable after heavy spring rains.

Southern Lowlands & Turkestan (Shymkent / Turkestan / Taraz)

Late spring heats noticeably: April and May see warm, dry days often between 20-30°C, ideal for visiting archaeological complexes early in the morning and avoiding the hottest hours. The Karatau foothills and nearby nature reserves are accessible for day hikes before the midsummer heat intensifies. Bring sun protection, water, and light cotton clothing; plan mid-day rests and book guided tours to explore remote ruins safely.

Western Caspian & Mangystau (Atyrau / Aktau / Mangystau plateau)

April warms quickly with sunny days typically in the mid-teens and the Mangystau’s landscapes becoming more comfortable for walking; heat remains moderate before the long summer develops. Blooming steppe shrubs add colour to the gullied plateaus and spring is excellent for photographing shoreline cliffs near Aktau. Carry water and sun protection for midday walks and expect the first tourist groups to reappear.
