High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.

Northern Steppe (Nur-Sultan / Pavlodar / Kostanay)

By late autumn persistent northerly winds and a bitter edge return, bringing frequent light snow and temps commonly between −5 and 0°C during the day with colder nights. Things feel raw on the open steppe; hotel heating is reliable but street-level wind tunnels in Nur-Sultan can feel much colder. Avoid last-minute camping plans and ensure footwear has good grip for icy sidewalks.

Central Uplands / Saryarka (Karaganda / Kokshetau / Karkaraly)

October’s color arrives quickly as grasses brown and sparse forests turn yellow; temperatures fall toward freezing at night and daytime highs drift into single figures, making outdoor excursions brisk. Roadside services thin out after the summer season, so plan fuel and food stops between towns like Karaganda and Shchuchinsk. A warm jacket and waterproof shoes make day trips comfortable; many small guesthouses close after October.

Eastern Altai & Lake Zaysan (Semey / East Kazakhstan)

September brings crisp air and the first reds and golds in alpine tundra, making it a great month for photography along the Dzungarian and Kurgaldzhino corridors. Day temperatures fall into the low teens and nights can already freeze at higher camps, so early fall layers are necessary. Fewer crowds and calmer storms make it a quieter but rewarding season for multi-day treks.

Southeast Tien Shan (Almaty / Ili Alatau / Charyn Canyon / Kolsai)

August retains summer warmth but begins to feel the first hints of autumn by month’s end - mornings cool noticeably while days remain pleasant for valley hikes and canyon exploration. This is a superb time for rafting on Ili tributaries and for visiting Charyn Canyon before September crowds thin. Carry insect repellent for riverside activities and pack layered clothing for cool mornings.

Southern Lowlands & Turkestan (Shymkent / Turkestan / Taraz)

September brings welcome relief as temperatures slide back toward the low- to mid-20s°C and nights become comfortable; this is an excellent month for longer excursions into the steppe and archaeological sites. Local festivals resume and the harvest transforms the landscape into warm colors, enhancing rural touring. Pack layers for cooler mornings, but expect largely dry and pleasant days.

Western Caspian & Mangystau (Atyrau / Aktau / Mangystau plateau)

August sustains high summer heat and becomes one of the driest months; daytime temperatures remain high and thunderstorms are rare. Travel plans that involve long drives across Mangystau should include spare water, fuel and emergency supplies, because settlements are widely spaced. Early mornings are best for canyon walks and photography, and evenings cool down enough for comfortable dining outside.
