How to Get to Kärdla
Kärdla (Hiiumaa) is accessed by a short domestic flight from Tallinn or by ferry via Rohuküla-Heltermaa plus a short road transfer. There is no railway on the island, so air/ferry+bus are the standard routes.
Kärdla Airport (KDL): Kärdla has its own small airport with scheduled domestic flights (typically to/from Tallinn). Flight time from Tallinn is short (about 25-30 minutes). Transfers from Kärdla airport to the town centre take only a few minutes by taxi or local transfer.
Tallinn Lennart Meri Airport (TLL): Most international travellers fly into Tallinn and then continue to Kärdla by domestic flight or by ferry+road (ferry route Rohuküla-Heltermaa plus drive to Kärdla).
Train: There is no rail service to Hiiumaa island; the Estonian rail network does not extend to Kärdla.
Bus / Ferry: The usual route from the mainland is ferry from Rohuküla to Heltermaa (operated by TS Laevad) then a ~30-40 minute drive to Kärdla. From Tallinn you can take a bus to Rohuküla and the ferry, or fly directly to Kärdla in seasonally scheduled domestic services. Local buses and taxis serve the island once you arrive.
