How to Get to Vohilaid
The usual route is to get to Hiiumaa (ferries run from Rohuküla on the mainland to Heltermaa on Hiiumaa). From Hiiumaa the nearest small harbors for island charters are Kärdla and Kõrgessaare; local boat operators run private transfers to Vohilaid in summer. There is no regular public ferry; hire a licensed skipper or join a guided birding trip from Hiiumaa.
Tips for Visiting Vohilaid
- Catch the local boat from Kärdla or Kõrgessaare rather than trying to improvise a crossing from Hiiumaa - local skippers know the currents and hidden shoals.
- Bring binoculars: Vohilaid is best appreciated as a birding stop; early morning and late afternoon are when eiders and geese move through.
- Respect private land and seasonal closures - much of Estonia's small islets are sensitive breeding habitat and may be off-limits in spring.
