Kaʻala
Mountain Highest summit on Oʻahu, significant Hawaiian mountain
The highest peak on Oahu’s Waianae Range, Ka’ala is reached by steep trails through native forest; hikers aim for ridge views over the leeward coast and island interior.
Kaʻala (Mount Kaʻala) is the highest summit of the Waianae Range on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu, and the island’s highest point. The mountain forms a prominent peak on Oʻahu’s western ridge and is an important watershed area.
The summit area contains communications and military facilities and patches of native forest; access to the summit is restricted in parts because of installations and conservation measures. Hikers use established trails on the Waianae side, with routes that gain significant elevation and require good fitness and preparation.
The mountain has long-standing cultural significance in Hawaiian tradition and today is managed with attention to ecological protection of native flora and fauna as well as safety around summit installations.
Mount Kaʻala stands in the western part of Oʻahu within the island’s Waianae Range and dominates the surrounding central and leeward landscapes; it is a prominent landmark visible from much of the island’s western side.
- Elevation: At 1,227 metres (4,025 feet) it is the highest point on the island of Oʻahu, offering expansive views across the island from the Waianae Range.
