Cliff Scenic cliff lookout with strong tradewinds and views
The Nuʻuanu Pali lookout on Oahu’s windward ridge offers steep-valley views, marked hiking trails and historical markers recounting the 1795 Battle of Nuʻuanu; strong winds often affect visits.
Nuʻuanu Pali is a steep windward cliff and historic lookout on Oʻahu in the Island of Oahu, Hawaii, notable for its panoramic views and strong tradewinds. It is part of the Nuʻuanu State Parkway and is a well known scenic and historic site on the island.
The paved Pali Lookout provides sweeping views across Kāneʻohe Bay and the windward coast and is popular for short visits and photography; on clear days the vista extends along the eastern shoreline. Nearby short trails and wayside areas give access to ridgeline viewpoints and native plantings.
The site is historically significant as the location of the Battle of Nuʻuanu in 1795 when Kamehameha I’s forces forced Oʻahu chiefs up the valley during his unification campaign. Over time the area has been preserved as a state wayside and lookout with interpretive signage explaining its historical importance.
Nuʻuanu Pali sits on the windward side of the Koolau Range above Nuʻuanu Valley, accessible from Honolulu via the Pali Highway; it is roughly a 15 to 30 minute drive from central Honolulu depending on traffic. The site occupies a high ridge with steep cliffs dropping toward the windward coast.
- Windy conditions: Strong tradewinds can make conditions at the lookout gusty and cool; the site is famous for consistently high winds.
- Cliff height and views: The cliff edge overlooks a drop of roughly 300 metres, providing wide views of the windward coast and Kāneʻohe Bay on clear days.
What to See #
- Pali Lookout: The roadside lookout at the top of the Pali Highway offers panoramic views over the windward coast and Kāneʻohe Bay, with interpretive panels describing the Battle of Nuʻuanu.
- Valley trails and wayside areas: Nuuanu Valley trails and nearby state wayside areas provide short walks through native flora and viewpoints along ridgelines.
How to Get to Nuʻuanu Pali #
The Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout sits on the Pali Highway (HI‑61) between downtown Honolulu and windward Oʻahu. By car it’s a short drive from central Honolulu - roughly 15-25 minutes (about 6-10 miles / 10-16 km) via Pali Highway - and there is a small parking area at the lookout with only a brief paved walk to the viewpoint.
The site is directly adjacent to HI‑61 (the Pali Highway); several public bus services run between Honolulu and the windward side along the Pali corridor and will drop you near the Pali Highway access (expect a short walk or transfer from the bus stop to the lookout).
Tips for Visiting Nuʻuanu Pali #
- Go early in the morning for clearer views and smaller crowds-the lookout fills quickly on good-weather days and mid‑day is often busiest and cloudier.
- Use the official Nuuanu Pali turnout/parking area off the Pali Highway (Route 61); don't attempt to stop on the highway itself and follow posted signs to the staffed lookout.
- Respect the fenced areas and cultural signage-this is a sacred historic site with strong winds and safety closures can occur, so check local conditions and leave promptly if staff ask.
Best Time to Visit Nuʻuanu Pali #
For the clearest lookout views, aim for the drier months (roughly April-October), visiting in the morning when conditions are often steadier.
