Koko Crater

Crater Prominent tuff cone with steep hiking railway trail

East of Honolulu, Koko Crater’s steep rail-track trail climbs a tuff cone to panoramic views; hikers and trail runners use the route, and the crater floor contains a botanical garden.

Main image

Koko Crater is a prominent tuff cone on the southeastern side of Oahu, formed by explosive volcanic activity and rising above the surrounding coastal plain. The crater and its rim are a well-known landmark in the Honolulu area and a frequent destination for hikers and sightseers.

A steep, popular trail climbs the crater along a former military tramway made of wooden ties and concrete steps, providing direct access to the summit ridge and panoramic coastal views. Within the crater floor is a dryland botanical garden that showcases arid-adapted plantings and is managed as part of Honolulu’s botanical gardens network.

The crater has been used for both military and civilian purposes over time, including the tramway built to service coastal defenses; today it is primarily a recreational and conservation area. Trails are exposed with little shade and can be hot and windy depending on conditions.

Koko Crater sits on Oahu’s southeastern coast near the suburb of Hawai’i Kai, about 7 miles (around 11 kilometers) southeast of downtown Honolulu. The crater overlooks Hanauma Bay and the residential and coastal areas of the island’s eastern shore.

  • Trail conditions: The popular summit route follows the old tramway up the crater and is composed of railroad ties and concrete steps; the climb is steep and exposes hikers to sun and wind, so bring water and sun protection.
  • Views: From the summit ridge there are clear views over Hanauma Bay, Hawai'i Kai, and the southeastern coastline of Oahu on a clear day.

What to See #

  • Koko Head stairs (tramway): A stairway trail built on a former military tramway consisting of 1,048 steps that rises to the crater rim and summit, offering panoramic views of Oahu's southeastern shore and Hanauma Bay.
  • Koko Crater Botanical Garden: A dryland botanical garden occupying the crater floor and maintained by Honolulu Botanical Gardens, focused on drought-tolerant and arid-adapted plants.
