Jetavana

Jetavana is an ancient Buddhist monastic complex located near the ruined city of Shravasti in Uttar Pradesh, India, traditionally associated with the Buddha and one of his principal monasteries. The site is historically significant as the monastery donated by the lay patron Anathapindika and associated with many episodes in Buddhist scripture.

Archaeological remains at Jetavana include the stupa mound and foundations of monastic buildings, courtyards and assembly halls; these ruins outline a large vihara complex rather than a single temple. The area is visited for both archaeological interest and religious pilgrimage, with visible earthworks and excavated architectural remains.

Jetavana was established in the ancient period after the land was purchased by Anathapindika from Prince Jeta and became a major residence and teaching site for the Buddha and his monastic community. Over time the original structures fell into ruin and have been the subject of archaeological work that documents layers of occupation and religious activity.

The site lies in the modern Sahet-Mahet area near Shravasti in northern Uttar Pradesh, within the broader historical region of Kosala. It is reached from local towns in the district and forms part of the cluster of Buddhist archaeological sites in the Shravasti area.
