The mosque was demolished on 6 December 1992 following mass mobilisations at the site, an act that led to widespread communal violence across India. After decades of legal proceedings, the Supreme Court of India delivered a landmark judgment on 9 November 2019 resolving the title dispute and directing that the contested land be handed over for construction of a Hindu temple while allocating alternate land for a mosque.
