Shravasti Archaeological Site

Shravasti is an ancient city and major centre of early Buddhism located in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India, known in texts as the home of the Jetavana monastery and a frequent place of residence for the Buddha. The site contains archaeological remains of monasteries, stupas and settlement mounds.

Highlights for visitors are the visible ruins of monastic compounds and stupas, the excavated mounds called Sahet and Mahet, and the remains traditionally identified with Jetavana. The place draws pilgrims and scholars interested in early Buddhist history and archaeology.

Historically Shravasti was a significant urban and religious centre in the ancient kingdom of Kosala; wealthy lay patrons such as Anathapindika endowed monasteries there and it features prominently in Buddhist scriptures. Over centuries the settlement declined and archaeological excavation has revealed layers dating to the early historic period.

The site lies in northern Uttar Pradesh, inland from the Ganges plain, and is accessed from regional towns and transport routes in the state.

• Jetavana Monastery ruins: The site of the ancient Jetavana monastery complex, founded through the patronage of the lay supporter Anathapindika and a central location in early Buddhist tradition.
• Sahet and Mahet mounds: The two archaeological mounds known as Sahet and Mahet that contain the remains of temples, stupas and habitation layers from ancient Shravasti.

Shravasti (Sahet-Mahet area) is accessed primarily by road. Visitors typically reach the district by hiring a taxi or taking regional buses from nearby district towns; the site is not served by intercity rail directly, so expect a final leg by road from the nearest railway/bus hub. Local roads lead to the archaeological/monastic areas where short walks are required between parking or drop‑off points and the ruins.

• Visit in the cooler months (roughly November-February) and go early in the morning to see the archaeological remains with fewer visitors and less heat.
• Enter the main Sahet-Maheth area (the core archaeological complex) to access the Jetavana monastery ruins; hire a local guide at the site entrance or nearby to get reliable historical context often skipped by independent visitors.
• Allow time to visit the small site museum and on-site inscriptions-many tourists breeze past these displays but they contain key artifacts and explanations that illuminate the ruins.
