Ise-Shima National Park is a coastal national park on the eastern side of Japan’s Kii Peninsula in Mie Prefecture, noted for its jagged ria coastline, islands and fishing communities. The area is associated with pearl cultivation and maritime landscapes that are culturally and ecologically significant.

Coastal scenery dominates the park experience, with sheltered bays, rocky headlands and small islands accessible by boat; Ago Bay and its inlets are a principal scenic focus. Toba provides visitor services and access to Mikimoto Pearl Island, where the history of cultured pearl production is interpreted for visitors.

The coastline and islands around Ise and Shima have long supported fishing, saltworks and pearl cultivation; these maritime industries shaped local settlements and cultural practices. The area has been managed for both conservation and tourism under Japan’s national park framework.

The park occupies coastal parts of Mie Prefecture on the Ise-Shima peninsula, facing Ise Bay and the Pacific; the city of Toba forms a common gateway, and the park is reachable by road and rail from Nagoya and other regional centres.

  • Best way to see it: The park includes a rugged ria coastline with numerous small islands and coastal vistas, making boat tours an excellent way to see its scenery.

What to See #

  • Ago Bay: Ago Bay is a deeply indented ria with many small inlets and islands, valued for scenic viewpoints and traditional pearl farms.
  • Toba / Mikimoto Pearl Island: Toba and Mikimoto Pearl Island provide visitor facilities and a museum dedicated to cultured pearls developed in the area.
