Meoto Iwa, the “married rocks,” are a pair of sacred sea stacks off the coast of Futami in Mie Prefecture, Japan, linked by a heavy shimenawa rope and associated with Shinto worship.

The two rocks are a compact coastal shrine feature that visitors view from the shore near the Futami Okitama Shrine; the shimenawa is periodically replaced in a public ritual. Many visitors come for shoreline photos and sunrise views when the rocks form a distinctive coastal silhouette.

The rocks are venerated in Shinto tradition as a representation of husband-and-wife kami (deities) and have been a local religious landmark for centuries; the associated shrine administers customary rituals and maintenance of the rope.

Meoto Iwa is located on the Pacific coast at Futami, part of the Ise area in Mie Prefecture, easily reached from the nearby town and shrine precinct.

Meoto Iwa (the “Wedded Rocks”) is at Futami Okitama Shrine in Futami, Ise, Mie Prefecture. Take the JR Sangū Line to Futamiokitama Station - the shrine and rocks are an easy 5-10 minute walk from that station.

From central Ise (Iseshi / Ise Station) you can reach Futamiokitama by a short local train ride on the JR Sangū Line (roughly 10-15 minutes); by car it’s a short drive from Ise city center (under 15 minutes).

• Aim for sunrise or early morning at Futami Okitama Shrine (Meoto Iwa) to catch the rocks with softer light and to avoid the mid‑day crowds that come from nearby Ise.
• Use Futamiura Station (JR/Kintetsu) and walk the short route from the station instead of arriving by car - the pedestrian approach puts you on the coastal path with the best vantage points.
