Ise Jingū
Religious Site Japan's sacred Shinto shrine complex rebuilt periodically
Ise Jingū in Mie Prefecture comprises the Inner and Outer Shrines central to Shinto practice; pilgrims and tourists visit for wooden shrine architecture, ceremonial rituals and the adjacent sacred forests.
Ise Jingū is Japan’s principal Shinto shrine complex located in Mie Prefecture, centred on the Inner Shrine (Naikū) dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. It is considered the holiest Shinto site and the focus of major imperial and religious ceremonies.
The complex includes the Inner Shrine and the Outer Shrine (Gekū), plus numerous auxiliary shrines spread across a wide, forested precinct. Buildings are constructed in the ancient shinmei-zukuri architectural style and set within tall cedar forests and quiet approaches.
Ise Jingū’s core practice is the Shikinen Sengū, a ritual rebuilding of the main shrine buildings every 20 years that continues an unbroken tradition; the complex has been an important religious centre for centuries and continues to be a living place of worship. The shrine enshrines imperial and agricultural deities and hosts major festivals.
The shrine lies near the city of Ise on the eastern side of Mie Prefecture, approximately 120 km southwest of Nagoya and about 2 hours by train from Nagoya or 1.5 hours from Kyoto by express services; the area around the shrine includes traditional streets and pilgrimage facilities.
- Shikinen Sengū ritual: Major buildings are rebuilt every 20 years under the Shikinen Sengū ritual; the most recent full cycle was completed in 2013.
- Religious significance: Naikū is dedicated to Amaterasu, the principal Shinto sun goddess, and many rituals and offerings are centred there; access to the inner sanctum is restricted.
What to See #
- Naikū (Inner Shrine): Naikū (Inner Shrine) - the primary sanctuary dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, located on an inner precinct and rebuilt every 20 years under the Shikinen Sengū tradition.
- Gekū (Outer Shrine): Gekū (Outer Shrine) - dedicated to the deity of agriculture and industry, Toyouke-Ōmikami, and located a few kilometres from the Inner Shrine within the wider complex.
How to Get to Ise Jingū #
From Nagoya Station, take the Kintetsu Limited Express to Ujiyamada Station (about 90 minutes) or JR Tokaido Line to Iseshi Station. Both stations are a 10-20 minute walk from the shrine precincts; follow signs for Naikū (Inner Shrine) or Gekū (Outer Shrine). Local buses run between the two shrines if walking is impractical.
Tips for Visiting Ise Jingū #
- Arrive before 8:00am to experience the shrine with far fewer visitors and better light for the cedar-lined approach.
- Use the dedicated Uji Bridge (Uji-bashi) entrance and stand back - locals bow before crossing; it's quiet ritual, not theatre.
- Walk from Iseshi or Ujiyamada Station rather than taking a taxi - the approach through tiny streets and souvenir stalls is part of the experience.
- Respect photography rules: interiors and certain ritual areas are off-limits; listen to shrine staff.
Best Time to Visit Ise Jingū #
Best visited early morning to avoid crowds and catch the cedar-lined approaches in soft light. Avoid the rainy season (June) if possible.
