Isalo National Park in south-central Madagascar is characterised by sandstone plateaus, eroded canyons and natural rock pools, forming one of the island’s most distinctive landscapes. It is a popular trekking destination with a range of day hikes and overnight routes.

Visitors encounter dramatic weathered sandstone cliffs, narrow gorges, endemic plants adapted to arid conditions and several scenic natural pools suitable for swimming. Trails access viewpoint rims, canyon bottoms and isolated oases where water and vegetation concentrate.

The massif and surrounding areas have long been part of local cultural landscapes; the park was created to protect the unique geology and associated flora and fauna and to manage increasing tourist use. Local communities provide guiding services and concessions for visitors.

The park sits in the Ihorombe region near the village of Ranohira in south-central Madagascar and is reached by road from regional towns and transport routes.

  • Landscape and access: Famous for its sandstone formations, deep canyons and natural rock pools; best explored on guided hikes from the village of Ranohira.
  • Best time to visit: Dry-season visits (May to October) are often preferred for hiking and clearer weather, though pools are most inviting in warmer months.

What to See #

  • Piscine Naturelle and pools: Natural pools and canyons including the well-known 'Piscine Naturelle', a scenic rock pool formed by stream erosion and popular for short swims.
  • Isalo massif and gorges: The Isalo massif - a sandstone plateau and eroded rock formations creating deep gorges, natural arches and layered cliffs across the park.
  • Hiking circuits: Hiking circuits that range from short viewpoint walks to multi-hour treks through sandstone canyons and along plateau edges.

How to Get to Isalo National Park #

Isalo National Park is accessed via the town of Ranohira, which serves as the park gateway. Ranohira sits on or just off the RN7 national road (the main southbound route in Madagascar); from Ranohira the park entrances and trails are a short walk or brief drive. Visitors normally reach Ranohira by road from regional centres such as Fianarantsoa or Toliara and use local taxis/4x4s to explore the park.

Tips for Visiting Isalo National Park #

  • Visit Isalo in the dry season (May-October) and base yourself in Ranohira so you can start hikes at sunrise for cooler conditions and the best light over canyons and natural pools.
  • Allocate a full day for the Canyon des Makis and the Piscine Naturelle loops and hire a licensed park guide at the entrance - guides will show side gorges and viewpoints that many self-guided visitors miss.
  • Start popular routes early to avoid the mid-day crowds at the natural pools and to enjoy quieter viewpoints such as the Namaza Window at sunrise.
