How to Get to Hpa-an

Hpa-an is usually reached overland from Yangon or Mawlamyine; the town has a small domestic airstrip but most international visitors fly into Yangon International Airport (RGN) and travel by road. There is no frequent direct rail service into Hpa-an, so buses and shared minivans are the practical default for most arrivals.

By Air

Yangon International Airport (RGN): Yangon is the main international gateway for Hpa-an. From Yangon you can take an express coach from Aung Mingalar Bus Terminal to Hpa-an (about 6-7 hours, roughly 6,000-10,000 MMK / US$3-7); taxis and private transfers are available but are significantly more expensive and take a similar travel time by road.

Hpa-an Airport (PAA): Hpa-an has a small domestic airport with limited services. If you can fly into PAA, the strip is only a short drive from town (typically 15-30 minutes); expect a taxi ride into the centre to cost on the order of a few thousand kyat (roughly 3,000-7,000 MMK) and take under 30 minutes, depending on conditions.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no frequent direct passenger rail service into Hpa-an itself. The nearest major railway hub is Mawlamyine Railway Station (Mawlamyine), served by Myanmar Railways; travelers sometimes take a train to Mawlamyine (journey times from Yangon vary and trains are slow/infrequent) and then continue by road to Hpa-an (see bus/minivan options below).

Bus: Buses and shared minivans are the main and most reliable public option. Direct express buses run from Yangon (Aung Mingalar Bus Terminal) to Hpa-an in about 6-7 hours (around 6,000-10,000 MMK). From Mawlamyine the road journey is much shorter - roughly 2-3 hours by bus or minivan (about 2,000-4,000 MMK). Local minivans and tourist shuttles also link Hpa-an with nearby towns and attractions at slightly higher fares.

How to Get Around Hpa-an

Hpa-an is best navigated by road - buses or shared minivans for arrivals and a mix of motorbike taxis, hired motorbikes and bicycles for getting around locally. For most visitors, hiring a motorbike or using local taxis combined with plenty of walking gives the most flexible and efficient way to see the caves, karst scenery and riverfront.

Nightlife in Hpa-an #

Hpa-an’s nightlife is low-key and local: think night market stalls, riverside beer, and the occasional karaoke room. The town isn’t about clubs - it’s about slow evenings after a day of caves and trekking, with food hawkers and guesthouse bars filling the main streets. Head to the night market and the riverfront for the most activity; expect places to start winding down by 10-11pm. Dress is casual, cash is king, and transport after dark can be sparse, so plan a tuk‑tuk or return to your guesthouse early.

Best Bets

Shopping in Hpa-an #

Hpa‑an’s shopping scene is compact and practical: think bustling street markets, roadside stalls and small shops selling Karen textiles, lacquerware and everyday groceries. The town’s main market near the river is where locals buy produce and simple home goods; look for handwoven shawls and carved wood from nearby villages. Bargain politely at markets, pay cash, and head to the evening stalls when more handicrafts appear. Main shopping areas cluster around the downtown market and the riverfront; bring small change and expect simple packaging rather than tourist-focused presentation.
