How to Get to Ijevan#
Ijevan is best reached via Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport (EVN); some travelers arrive via Gyumri’s Shirak Airport (LWN) and continue overland. From Yerevan the practical connections are intercity buses and marshrutkas rather than trains.
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN): The main gateway to Armenia, located near Yerevan. From Zvartnots you can take the airport bus (Route 201) to central Yerevan (approx. 300 AMD, ~30-45 min) and then a marshrutka or taxi onward to Ijevan (see bus info below). Taxis from the airport to Yerevan centre typically cost around 3,000-7,000 AMD and take 20-40 minutes depending on traffic.
Shirak/Gyumri Airport (LWN): Shirak serves Gyumri and some domestic/international flights; it’s useful if you arrive there and need to travel to northeastern Tavush. Local taxis and airport shuttles will get you into Gyumri (~10-20 min, fares ~300-1,000 AMD). From Gyumri you can continue to Yerevan by intercity bus or marshrutka and then change for Ijevan.
Train: Armenia’s passenger rail network is limited and there is no direct, regular train service to Ijevan. The main long-distance hub is Yerevan railway station (Yerablur/Republic Square area for arrivals); from Yerevan you use buses/marshrutkas to reach regional towns.
Bus / Marshrutka: The common way to reach Ijevan is by marshrutka (minibus) from Yerevan’s Kilikia (or Kilikia/Kilikyan) bus station and other intercity minibus stops. Journey time Yerevan-Ijevan is roughly 2.5-3.5 hours depending on route and traffic; fares are modest (typically around 1,200-2,000 AMD). There are also occasional direct intercity buses from Yerevan’s central bus terminals; check schedules locally.
How to Get Around Ijevan#
Ijevan is most easily navigated by road - intercity marshrutkas and regional buses from Yerevan are the practical backbone. For local travel, taxis and walking cover most needs; renting a car is useful if you want to explore remote Tavush sites.
- Intercity marshrutka (1,200-2,000 AMD) - Main practical option for reaching and leaving Ijevan. Marshrutkas depart from Yerevan’s main minibus stations several times a day; they are frequent, inexpensive, and the ride follows the main highway into Tavush. Expect basic seating and luggage space - buy tickets at the station or onboard from the driver.
- Regional bus (1,500-2,500 AMD) - Larger coaches occasionally run between Yerevan and regional centres; they are more comfortable than marshrutkas and take similar time. Buses serve the main town centre in Ijevan and are a good choice if you have more luggage or prefer a reserved seat.
- Taxi / Private transfer (10,000-20,000 AMD (approx.)) - Taxis or private transfers from Yerevan or from Zvartnots airport are door-to-door and faster, but significantly more expensive. Agree the fare before starting (or use a reputable app/taxi company). A private transfer from Yerevan to Ijevan typically takes ~2.5-3 hours.
- Car hire (Rental from ~15,000 AMD/day (varies)) - Hiring a car in Yerevan gives freedom to explore Tavush and nearby attractions at your own pace. Roads are generally passable but can be narrow in mountain sections; a GPS and local map are recommended. Fuel and occasional road tolls should be budgeted separately.
- Local taxi / shared taxi (300-2,000 AMD) - Within Ijevan and nearby villages, taxis and shared taxis handle short hops and trips to trailheads or wineries. Negotiate fares up front; drivers expect cash in Armenian dram.
- Walking - Ijevan town centre is compact and walkable; most guesthouses, restaurants and local sights are within 15-30 minutes on foot. Walking is the best way to explore the immediate area and rural lanes nearby.
