How to Get to Dilijan#
Dilijan is reached most easily via Yerevan - fly into Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) and continue overland. There is no direct passenger rail to Dilijan; road (marshrutka or taxi) is how most visitors arrive.
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN): From Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport you can get to Dilijan by taking a taxi direct (drive ~1.5-2 hours; ~AMD 12,000-20,000) or by getting into Yerevan city (taxi or airport bus) and then catching a marshrutka (minibus) from the Kilikia/Basaran bus area to Dilijan (journey ~1.5-2 hours; marshrutka fares commonly ~AMD 1,500-2,000).
Shirak (Gyumri) Airport (LWN): Shirak is farther west; if you land there you would typically transfer to Gyumri town and travel overland to Dilijan by long-distance bus or private taxi (drive ~3-4 hours depending on route). Taxis are faster but significantly more expensive than intercity minibuses.
Train: There is no direct mainline passenger rail service to Dilijan; the nearest working national rail hubs are around Yerevan. For rail travel you would travel to Yerevan’s railway station (Yerevan Central) and continue by road to Dilijan.
Bus: Regular minibuses (marshrutkas) run from Yerevan (Kilikia/Basaran area or the Northern Bus Station) to Dilijan; journey time is about 1.5-2 hours. There are also regional buses from nearby towns (Ijevan, Sevan) that connect to Dilijan. Shared taxis are faster but cost more.
How to Get Around Dilijan#
Dilijan is best navigated by road - marshrutkas and taxis handle virtually all arrivals from Yerevan. For visiting parks and the town centre, walking works well; hire a car only if you want to explore more remote areas.
- Regional bus / Marshrutka (AMD 1,500-2,000) - The marshrutka is the most common local option for intercity travel - frequent services connect Yerevan, Sevan, Ijevan and Dilijan. They are inexpensive and direct but can be cramped; bring small change and expect simple stops. Timetables are informal, so arrive early at the departure point.
- Taxi (AMD 12,000-20,000) - Taxis provide door-to-door convenience and are readily available from Yerevan and local towns. Agree a fixed fare before departing; for Zvartnots-Dilijan expect a substantially higher fare than a marshrutka but much faster and more comfortable for luggage or groups.
- Car hire (AMD 20,000+/day (depends on vehicle)) - Renting a car gives the greatest flexibility to explore Tavush Province and the surrounding nature. Roads are generally in good condition on main routes but can be narrower in mountain sections; a small SUV is useful outside summer. Fuel is widely available in larger towns.
- Local minibus / town bus (AMD 100-300) - Within Dilijan and neighboring villages, small municipal buses and minibuses run short routes; they are cheap and useful for short hops into the town centre and parks. Services are basic and not always frequent-ask at your hotel for current local schedules.
- Walking - Dilijan is compact and very walkable - the town centre, lake area and trails are best explored on foot. Walking is the simplest way to enjoy the wooden-architecture streets and nearby short hikes.
