How to Get to Berd#
Berd in Tavush Province is a remote town best reached overland from Yerevan by marshrutka (minibus) or private transfer; Zvartnots (Yerevan) is the main international airport used by visitors. Expect long road journeys and limited rail options.
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN): Yerevan’s Zvartnots Airport is the main international gateway for Tavush Province and Berd (about 140-160 km by road from Yerevan to Berd). Driving from Yerevan to Berd takes roughly 2.5-3.5 hours depending on route and border/security checks; taxi or private transfers are available though relatively long and can cost AMD 25,000-45,000 or more depending on vehicle and negotiation. From Yerevan you can travel by bus/minibus (marshrutka) toward Tavush and change as needed.
Tbilisi International Airport (TBS, Georgia): For some northern approaches and cross-border itineraries, travellers sometimes use Tbilisi and then cross into Armenia; this route is longer and involves border crossing formalities, so it’s less common for direct travel to Berd.
Train: Armenia’s rail network does not provide convenient, frequent passenger services to Berd; trains are not the primary option for reaching Tavush settlements.
Bus / Marshrutka: Marshrutkas (minibuses) and regional buses are the main public transport mode to Berd. Regular minibuses depart from Yerevan’s northern bus stations (e.g., the Northern Bus Station/Charbakh area) toward Tavush region towns; journey times are typically several hours with one or more changes. Fares are low (single-digit to low double-digit AMD) but schedules and comfort vary.
How to Get Around Berd#
Expect long road journeys to reach Berd; marshrutkas and private transfers from Yerevan are the usual choices. For local exploration hire a car or use taxis where minibuses don’t operate.
- Marshrutka / regional minibuses (~500-2,000 AMD (short/medium routes) ) - Marshrutkas are the most common and affordable way to reach Berd from Yerevan and other regional centres. They depart from major bus stations and usually require changes; fares are low but vehicles can be crowded and timetables informal.
- Coach / intercity bus (~1,000-5,000 AMD depending on distance) - Occasionally regional coaches serve longer routes to Tavush towns; these offer more comfort than marshrutkas but are less frequent. Check Yerevan bus station timetables for departures and routes.
- Taxi / private transfer (~25,000-45,000+ AMD one-way from Yerevan) - Taxis or hired cars are practical for direct transfers to Berd, especially for groups or if you have luggage. Negotiate the fare up front or use a reputable agency; transfers are faster and more comfortable than minibuses.
- Car rental / driving (~15,000-35,000 AMD/day plus fuel) - Driving gives maximum flexibility for exploring Tavush’s borderland scenery and mountain roads. Road quality varies; GPS and up-to-date maps are recommended. Border-adjacent areas may require attention to local regulations.
- Local taxis / shared rides (~500-3,000 AMD per short trip) - Within the region, local taxis and shared rides are common for short hops between villages and nearby attractions. They are practical where scheduled services are sparse.
- Walking - Around Berd’s centre and nearby viewpoints, walking is practical and pleasant; trails outside town may be rough and require good footwear.
