Hoggar Mountains

The Hoggar Mountains (also called the Ahaggar) are a highland volcanic range in southern Algeria in Tamanrasset Province, notable for Mount Tahat, the highest peak at 2,918 metres. The range rises sharply from the central Sahara and is a prominent geographical feature of southern Algeria.

The area is valued for its dramatic rocky massifs, deep gorges and high plateaus rather than lush vegetation. Key visitor highlights include high-elevation viewpoints, rock formations and desert trekking routes; routes often start from the town of Tamanrasset. Assekrem and other plateaus provide accessible sunrise and sunset viewpoints for walkers and small guided groups.

Historically the Hoggar have been inhabited by Tuareg communities and served as trade and pastoral corridors across the central Sahara. The landscape contains prehistoric rock art and archaeological features that attest to earlier human occupation and regional trade networks.

Geographically the range sits in the central Sahara of southern Algeria, well inland from the Mediterranean coast; the nearest regional centre is the city of Tamanrasset, which lies to the south of the main massifs. The surrounding landscape is arid desert with sparse settlement outside oasis towns and caravan routes.
