Tassili n’Ajjer is a high Saharan plateau and protected park in southeastern Algeria, renowned for its vast ensembles of prehistoric rock art and its unusual sandstone geomorphology. The landscape combines thousands of paintings and engravings with eroded rock formations and natural arches.
Visitors study extensive rock-art galleries that record human occupation and changing environments from when the Sahara was far wetter through subsequent aridification. The park also features spectacular sandstone pillars, arches and mesas that form a distinctive desert scenery.
The rock art was created over many millennia and illustrates shifts in subsistence from hunter-gatherer to pastoral economies, as well as a wide variety of animals now absent from the region.
