Historic City of Meknes

The Historic City of Meknes is an imperial Moroccan capital established and lavishly developed under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It combines monumental gates, palaces, and urban quarters laid out to serve a royal household.

Signature landmarks include grand gates such as Bab Mansour, the royal mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and large service structures including the Heri es-Souani granaries and stables. The scale and ornamentation of these constructions reflect the city’s imperial function.

Meknes became a principal royal city when Moulay Ismail selected it as his capital, initiating an extensive building campaign that repurposed existing urban fabric and added monumental structures. The city continued as an important regional centre after the imperial period.

Meknes lies in northern Morocco at the southern foothills of the Middle Atlas range, in an agricultural plain historically connected to nearby cities such as Fes.
