How to Get to Himarë (town)#
Himarë is reached primarily by road; the closest major airport is Tirana Nënë Tereza (TIA), while seasonal ferry links from Corfu (CFU) to Sarandë give an alternate route. There is no direct train service - buses and private minibuses (furgon) are the practical way in and around the area.
Tirana Nënë Tereza International Airport (TIA): The main international gateway for Albania. From TIA you can take a shared minibus (furgon) or intercity bus to Tirana city centre (~20-30 min, ~200-300 ALL / €1.5-3) and then a direct bus or minibus toward Sarandë/Vlorë/Himarë. Expect total travel time Tirana→Himarë by bus 4-5 hours; typical minibus fares Tirana→Himarë are around €12-18 (≈1,500-2,500 ALL).
Corfu International Airport (CFU), Greece: Many travellers fly to nearby Corfu and cross to southern Albania by ferry. From CFU you can take a taxi or bus to Corfu port (15-30 min, €3-8), then a seasonal ferry to Sarandë (30-60 min) - ferry prices typically €10-25 depending on operator and season. From Sarandë take a bus or taxi to Himarë (about 1-1.5 hours, €3-8).
Train: There is no regular national passenger rail service into Himarë; Albania’s rail network does not serve the southern coastal road to Himarë.
Bus: Intercity buses and private minibuses (furgon) are the main public option. From Tirana buses depart from the main bus station (Terminali i Autobusëve / Rruga e Dibrës) to Sarandë or Vlorë; from Sarandë there are frequent minibuses to Himarë (about 1-1.5 hours, ~€3). There are also direct minibuses from Tirana to Himarë (4-5 hours, ~€12-18). Local taxis operate along the coast for shorter hops (prices vary).
How to Get Around Himarë (town)#
Road transport (buses, minibuses, private car) is the practical way to get to and around Himarë; seasonal ferries from Corfu add an international option. For local mobility, taxis and walking serve most needs - public schedules thin out in winter.
- Intercity bus / Minibus (furgon) (€3-18) - The dominant way to get to and from Himarë. Minibuses run from Tirana, Vlorë and Sarandë; they are frequent in summer and less so in low season. Expect narrow, winding coastal roads and variable schedules; book long-distance trips in advance in high season and arrive early at the terminal.
- Car / Rental (€25-70/day (rental)) - Driving gives the most flexibility for accessing beaches and villages along the Riviera. Roads are mostly paved but can be narrow and steep; summer traffic increases travel times. Fuel and tolls in Albania are modest compared with Western Europe; parking in Himarë town centre can be limited at peak times.
- Taxi / Private transfer (€3-160) - Taxis and private transfers are common for airport runs or short hops where schedules are poor. Expect higher per-kilometre costs than buses; fixed transfers from Tirana to Himarë start around €120-160 depending on vehicle and season. Agree the fare up front.
- Ferry (via Sarandë) (€10-25) - Seasonal passenger ferries connect Corfu with Sarandë; crossings take 30-60 minutes. Ferries are useful to connect international flights into Corfu with the Albanian coast - from Sarandë you continue by bus or taxi to Himarë (≈1-1.5 hours). Check schedules and book in summer.
- Local buses / taxis (€1-8) - Short-distance transport along the coast (Sarandë↔Himarë↔Vlorë) is handled by local buses and taxis. Services are frequent in summer but reduced off-season; carry cash, small change is useful.
- Walking - Himarë’s town centre is compact and best explored on foot - beaches, restaurants and the castle are all walkable. Walking is the easiest way to navigate narrow streets and find hidden viewpoints.
