Heraion of Samos Archaeological Site

The Heraion of Samos is an ancient sanctuary on the island of Samos dedicated to the goddess Hera, notable for the remains of a large temple complex and associated votive areas dating to the Archaic and Classical Greek periods.

Visitors encounter the foundations and surviving architectural elements of the sanctuary’s principal temple along with altar areas and excavation zones that reveal multiple construction phases. The site illustrates large-scale temple building and votive activity on Samos across several centuries.

The sanctuary grew in importance during the first millennium BCE and was associated with the island’s major civic and religious activities; archaeological work has documented temple reconstructions and changes in layout over time.

Located on the southeastern side of Samos, the Heraion lies near the modern town of Pythagoreion and the island’s southern coastline, and is accessible from local roads and visitor facilities.

What to See#

• Temple of Hera (Heraion): The remains of the sanctuary’s principal Temple of Hera, consisting of foundations, column fragments and podiums that reflect several construction phases from the Archaic and Classical periods.

The Heraion of Samos (the Hera sanctuary) is on the southern coast of Samos island near the village of Ireon/Pythagoreion. From Samos (Vathy) or from Pythagoreio (the island’s main port and airport area) drive along the main coastal road to the Ireon/Heraion turn-off; the site is signed and is a short drive from Pythagoreio (only a few kilometres). Local KTEL buses that run between Vathy and Pythagoreio normally stop nearby-expect a brief walk from the bus stop to the archaeological site.

• Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to see the temple foundations in the best light; archaeological signage and low visitor numbers at those times make the site easier to appreciate.
• Combine the Heraion visit with the nearby Eupalinos Tunnel and the Archaeological Museum in Pythagoreion to place the monumental temple remains in their historical context - many visitors skip the museum but it houses key finds from the site.
• Use the main site car park/visitor entrance and follow the marked paths along the temple footprint and the coastal viewpoint; the short coastal walk gives a different perspective of the sacred precinct that many miss.
