How to Get to Handa, Aichi#

Handa sits on the Chita Peninsula south of Nagoya and is easiest reached via Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) or Nagoya rail hub. Rail connections from Nagoya and Centrair (via Meitetsu and local lines) are the most practical way into the city, with local buses and taxis for last-mile travel.

By Air

Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO): The main international gateway for the Tokai region. From Centrair you can take Meitetsu trains (μ-SKY/express/rapid services) into the Nagoya area and transfer toward Handa; typical door-to-door rail journeys to central Handa take about 35-50 minutes and cost roughly ¥1,000-¥1,300. There are also airport limousine / shuttle bus services and taxis - the bus takes about 40-60 minutes and fares are around ¥1,000-¥1,300; a taxi is considerably faster door-to-door but much more expensive.

Nagoya Airfield / Komaki (NKM): A smaller domestic airport with limited scheduled services. If you arrive here you normally transfer via Nagoya (by local train or subway) to reach Handa; total travel time is usually 60-90 minutes depending on connections and costs for the rail segments are typically in the ¥1,000-¥1,800 range.

By Train & Bus

Train: Handa is served by local rail connections to Nagoya; the easiest long-distance rail hub is Nagoya Station, from which you transfer to local Meitetsu/JR services toward the Chita Peninsula and Handa. Typical rail journeys from Nagoya to Handa take roughly 30-45 minutes and fares are commonly in the ¥400-¥900 range depending on route and transfers.

Bus: Local and regional buses (operated by companies such as Meitetsu Bus and Chita-area services) connect Handa with nearby towns, Ōbu and Nagoya, and there are airport shuttle buses from Centrair. Local bus fares tend to be about ¥200-¥400 for short trips; airport shuttles and longer regional routes cost more (around ¥800-¥1,300) and travel times vary from 20 minutes up to an hour.

How to Get Around Handa, Aichi#

The most efficient way to get to and around Handa is by regional rail (Meitetsu and local JR services) with buses and taxis filling gaps for less-served areas. For short, local exploration the city centre is very walkable and cycling is a popular secondary option.

  • Meitetsu trains (¥360-¥1,300) - Meitetsu services are the most convenient regional rail option for reaching Handa from Centrair and Nagoya. Expect to change at a junction (for example Ōtagawa on routes toward the Kōwa/Chita lines) for final onward services to Handa. Trains are frequent, punctual and the best mix of speed and cost for most visitors; carry an IC card (TOICA/manaca) to speed transfers.
  • JR local trains (¥200-¥800) - JR local lines serve parts of the Chita Peninsula and provide alternative connections via Nagoya and Ōbu. JR is handy if you hold a Japan Rail Pass for broader regional travel, but local Meitetsu services are often more direct for Handa. Check timetables for first/last trains if arriving late.
  • Local buses (¥200-¥400) - Local buses (operated by regional companies) link neighbourhoods within Handa and connect the city to nearby towns and stations. They are inexpensive and useful for areas not served by rail, but frequencies can be low on weekends and evenings - check schedules in advance. Exact routes and fares vary by operator; expect fares around ¥200-¥400 for typical short trips.
  • Airport / highway buses (¥800-¥1,300) - Direct airport shuttles from Centrair and regional highway buses provide a straightforward, luggage-friendly option to Handa and nearby towns. Buses are comfortable and avoid train transfers; travel time from the airport is typically 40-60 minutes depending on route and traffic. Tickets are bought at the airport counter or vending machines; carry cash or a credit card.
  • Taxis (¥700-¥8,000+) - Taxis are widely available for short hops within Handa and for door-to-door trips from stations or the airport when convenience outweighs cost. Short fares inside the city are reasonable, but airport or long intercity taxi rides can be expensive - use them selectively (for late arrivals, heavy luggage or when public transport has finished for the night).
  • Bicycle (¥100-¥1,000) - Handa and the Chita Peninsula are relatively flat in parts and suitable for cycling; some local rental shops and hotels offer bikes. Cycling is a pleasant way to explore the waterfront and local neighbourhoods, but watch for narrow streets and limited protected cycle lanes outside central areas. Helmets and basic lights are recommended, especially if you plan to ride at dusk.
  • Walking - Much of Handa’s centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot - walking is often the fastest way to move between shops, temples and the waterfront. Side streets are safe and sidewalks common in central areas, but distances to outlying attractions can make walking impractical without transit or a bike.
