Atsuta Shrine is a major Shinto shrine in Atsuta-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The site is traditionally said to have been established in the 2nd century and is regarded as one of Japan’s most important shrines.

The shrine precincts include a large main hall, multiple subsidiary shrines and a museum-like treasure hall with historical ritual objects. The complex is set in an extensive wooded area within the city and is used for formal Shinto ceremonies and seasonal festivals.

By tradition the shrine houses the sacred sword Kusanagi, counted among the Three Imperial Regalia of Japan. The shrine has been rebuilt and renovated repeatedly over centuries and has long-standing ties to the imperial household and regional authorities.

The shrine sits in central Nagoya’s Atsuta ward, within the urban area of the city and accessible from the Nagoya transport network.

What to See#

• Treasure Hall: Located on the shrine grounds, the Treasure Hall displays swords, mirrors, armor and ritual objects connected with the shrine’s history and the Imperial Regalia.
• Honden and precincts: The Honden (main hall) is the principal worship building where traditional Shinto rites are performed; it sits within a large, wooded precinct dotted with subsidiary shrines and torii.

From Nagoya Station take the Meitetsu Line or the subway Meijo Line to Jingū-mae Station; the shrine is a short 5-10 minute walk from the station.

• Enter by the main torii and walk the cedar-lined approach; the moss and root patterns on the steps are centuries old and worth a slow look.
• Visit the Atsuta Treasure Hall (Hōmotsukan) to see one of Shinto's most important artifacts - a collection linked to the Three Sacred Treasures - on rotating display.
• Avoid Obon and New Year's daylight hours when the shrine fills with worshippers.
