How to Get to Hạ Long#

Hạ Long is reached most easily via Vân Đồn International Airport (VDO) or overland from Hanoi (Noi Bai) by bus or private car. There is no direct national rail service into the city - the closest rail links are in Hải Phòng and Hanoi, with onward buses or taxis to Hạ Long.

By Air

Van Don International Airport (VDO): The closest airport to Hạ Long, about 45-55 km from the city centre. Regular shuttle minibuses between Vân Đồn Airport and Hạ Long run for roughly 100,000 VND per person and take about 60-75 minutes; taxis and private transfers take ~50-75 minutes and typically cost ~600,000-900,000 VND depending on vehicle type and luggage.

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN): Hanoi’s main international airport is the most common international gateway for visitors bound for Hạ Long. From Noi Bai you can take a direct bus from Hanoi (see Bus section) or arrange a private car transfer: express buses from Hanoi to Hạ Long cost around 120,000-220,000 VND and take about 3.5-4 hours; a private car/taxi or Grab for the full transfer will usually take 2.5-3.5 hours and cost around 1,000,000-1,800,000 VND.

Cat Bi International Airport (HPH): Located in Hải Phòng, Cat Bi is an alternative for some domestic flights. The drive to Hạ Long is typically 60-90 minutes; shared or scheduled buses/taxis from Hải Phòng to Hạ Long cost roughly 100,000-200,000 VND and private taxis run about 700,000-1,200,000 VND.

By Train & Bus

Train: Hạ Long has no direct national passenger rail service. The nearest main railhead is Hải Phòng Railway Station (Ga Hải Phòng) and, of course, Hà Nội Railway Station in Hanoi for long-distance services. Trains from Hanoi to Hải Phòng take about 2-2.5 hours (tickets commonly start from ~70,000 VND depending on class); from Hải Phòng you must continue to Hạ Long by bus or taxi (about 1-1.5 hours, 50,000-150,000 VND).

Bus: Direct intercity buses are the most common overland option to Hạ Long. Buses depart Hanoi from My Dinh, Giáp Bát and several private operators (Kumho, Quảng Ninh lines) with fares typically 120,000-220,000 VND and a journey time of about 3.5-4 hours depending on traffic. Local buses and shuttle minibuses connect Hạ Long with surrounding towns and Van Don Airport; expect lower fares (from ~30,000-120,000 VND) for regional services.

How to Get Around Hạ Long#

Hạ Long is best navigated with a mix of boats for bay sightseeing and taxis/Grab for on-land transfers; public buses are the cheapest option if you have time. For transfers to/from airports or Hanoi, scheduled intercity buses and private car hires are straightforward and commonly used.

  • Taxi (40,000-800,000 VND) - Taxis are plentiful and convenient for short trips around town or transfers to/from the harbour. Meters start low but longer rides around the city or to/from the airport can run 150,000-800,000 VND; always check the meter or agree a fare for long-distance trips. Use reputable companies (Mai Linh, Vinasun or local Quảng Ninh brands) and insist on the meter for clarity.
  • Grab / Ride-hailing (30,000-1,500,000 VND) - Grab operates in Hạ Long for on-demand car and motorbike rides and is often cheaper than metered taxis for short hops. Prices fluctuate by demand but are convenient for quick trips; for longer intercity transfers (Hanoi-Hạ Long) expect quotes comparable to private taxis. Payment by card or Grab wallet is available in many cases.
  • Public buses & shuttles (7,000-220,000 VND) - City buses and regional shuttle minibuses are the most budget-friendly way to get around and to reach Van Don Airport or nearby towns. Urban fares are low (often 7,000-20,000 VND) while scheduled regional buses from Hanoi or Hải Phòng are typically 120,000-220,000 VND. Buses can be slow in peak traffic but are reliable for reaching bus stations and major tourist piers.
  • Tour boats & junks (Hạ Long Bay) (300,000-3,000,000 VND) - Most visitors explore Hạ Long Bay by day cruises or overnight junks leaving from the Tuan Chau and Bai Chay piers. Day cruises commonly cost from about 300,000-1,500,000 VND per person depending on boat quality and inclusions; overnight cruises start higher. Book through reputable operators and check itinerary, meals and cave/rafting inclusions before you pay.
  • Car or motorbike rental (120,000-1,500,000 VND) - Motorbikes are available to rent for short-term local exploration; expect roughly 120,000-200,000 VND per day with a deposit. Self-driving cars are less common - many visitors hire a car with driver for day trips to baie sites or to Hanoi (daily rates often 1,000,000 VND and up). Riding in Vietnam requires vigilance - traffic can be chaotic and road signage limited.
  • Walking - Hạ Long’s waterfront promenade, Bai Chay Bridge area and sections of the city are pleasant to explore on foot for short distances. Walking is the best way to see the harbourside, night markets and nearby cafes, but distances between bus stations, hotels and some piers can be large - combine walking with taxis or Grab for efficiency.
