Cát Bà Island
Island Large Vietnamese island with national park and karst
The largest island in the Ha Long Bay region, Cát Bà hosts a national park of limestone karsts, forested trails and sea caves; visitors come for hiking, rock climbing, boat trips and access to nearby bay cruises.
Cát Bà Island is the largest island of the Cát Bà Archipelago in Haiphong municipality, northern Vietnam. It is a mix of coastal settlement, karst landscape and protected forest and is a primary base for visiting nearby Lan Ha Bay.
The island is used for beach activities, sea-kayaking, rock climbing and multi-day hikes. Tourists often explore limestone karst scenery and marine areas around the island; the national park contains marked trails and viewpoints and boat trips connect to numerous small bays and islets.
Cát Bà National Park protects much of the island’s interior and was established to conserve karst forest, endemic species and watershed values. The island developed as a fishing and maritime hub and grew in recent decades as tourism expanded, with ferry and boat services becoming the main transport links.
Cát Bà sits off Vietnam’s northeast coast within Haiphong municipality, separated from the mainland by channels and bays. The island lies east of Hai Phong city and faces Lan Ha Bay and the outer reaches of Hạ Long Bay to the east and south.
- Lan Ha Bay: Lan Ha Bay lies to the south and east of the island and is commonly visited by day boats for safe anchorage and limestone scenery.
- Transport: Ferry crossings from Hai Phong and Hạ Long provide the main public transport links; travel times depend on vessel type but are commonly under two hours from Hai Phong.
What to See #
- Cát Bà National Park: A protected area covering much of the island that conserves limestone karst, evergreen forest and a variety of endemic plants and animals; it contains marked trails and viewpoints used for hiking and wildlife watching.
- Cát Bà Town: The island's principal town and ferry hub, where visitor services, guesthouses and boat connections to Haiphong and Hạ Long are concentrated.
How to Get to Cát Bà Island #
From Hanoi: take a shuttle bus or private transfer (≈2.5-3.5 hours) to Hai Phong or directly to the ferry terminal; ferries and fast boats run from Haiphong’s Bach Dang Pier and Hạ Long City to Cat Ba (travel time 45-90 minutes depending on service). From Haiphong city center, regular hydrofoils and car ferries depart to Cát Bà town (Cat Ba). Once on the island, most sites are accessed by motorbike, local taxi, or booked boat tours to Lan Ha Bay.
Tips for Visiting Cát Bà Island #
- Take the earliest ferry from Hai Phong or Haiphong's Bach Dang pier to avoid afternoon winds and roving day-trip crowds.
- Rent a motorbike for the interior roads-drivers from Cat Ba Town will insist on helmets; check brakes before leaving (some hills are steep).
- Hike to Hospital Cave or Cannon Fort at sunrise for light and fewer people; both have small local entrance fees or donation boxes.
- Book homestays in Cai Beo fishing village if interested in quiet mornings and fishermen's routines-ask for a room with a balcony facing Lan Ha Bay.
- If visiting Cat Ba National Park, bring insect repellent-tropical forest trails are humid and leech-prone during the rainy season.
Best Time to Visit Cát Bà Island #
Best visited in spring or autumn for moderate temperatures and calmer seas; avoid late summer monsoons for boating.
