From Bukit Lawang the routes thread into the lowland rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park, moving through dense canopy, tangled roots and river valleys with occasional waterfalls. The main draw is wildlife - especially wild Sumatran orangutans that can be seen in the canopy and along forest edges with the help of local guides.

There are no formal mountain huts; treks use village guesthouses in Bukit Lawang for pre- and post-trek nights and simple jungle camps or homestays on multi-day routes. The area is notable for relatively accessible orangutan viewing, hands-on local guides and short itineraries that fit travellers with limited time.

Kualanamu International Airport outside Medan is the closest major airport serving the region. From Medan, shared minivans, local buses or private cars run to Bukit Lawang - commonly a 3 to 4 hour drive depending on traffic and road conditions.

Most operators base itineraries in Bukit Lawang and walk upstream into the forest along the Bohorok River; both guided day trips and 2-3 day overnight treks depart from the village.

On Sumatra the clearest window for jungle walking is May to September when trails are less sodden and river levels are lower, making crossings safer. Heavy rains from November to March can make sections slippery, raise river flow and increase leech activity.

Book guides and any park arrangements in advance for the high season; expect tropical conditions - high heat and humidity and plenty of insects - and follow guide instructions around wildlife to minimise disturbance.
